When Life Gives You Lemons…

bling slingI was going to publish this blog last Monday, but Sunday night as I was typing the last sentence on my laptop, I heard what sounded like small fireworks. I realized the crackles and pops were the last exhales of my dying computer. I was horrified! I hadn’t saved my writings for the past two weeks including numerous edits to my book on my flash drive! That night if someone had handed me lemons, I probably would have chucked them at him. Which just reminds me that sometimes it takes a little (or a lot of time) to see dessert come out of our disappointments.

The next day I took my brother-in-law’s advice and ordered an external hard drive case off e-bay to see if I could do a brain (hard drive) transplant and retrieve my information. As I was awaiting it’s arrival, once again, God encouraged my heart about trusting Him in the midst of life’s disappointments.

So that being said…here is what was to be last weeks blog. It’s the message behind the sling I am wearing in the picture.

In January, when I learned the extent of my shoulder injury, I decided to have a sling made to encourage myself. I planned on buying something with a little color, but when a good friend took me material shopping I was drawn to a shimmery floral pattern.

When I saw the material I thought of three things:

1. “When life gives you lemons make lemon meringue pie.” (Keep in mind— the lemons have to be squeezed, mixed, baked and cooled in the process of making the pies.)

2. Broken but beautiful- No matter how broken we are physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually, God sees us as beautiful and loves us unconditionally.

3. “Beauty for ashes”-God will bring the best out of even the worst situations.

Since I have been wearing a belt around my shoulders (the belt works better than the rubber tubing the doc gave me that kept rolling up and attacking my face.) and my arm in a sling, so many people have asked what happened to me or how I hurt myself, I thought about handing out written explanations. Now that I have my “bling sling” I think I will.

But the papers I plan on handing out will be more about encouragement than explanation. For my sling constantly reminds me of Romans 8:28. “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (NKJV). Which only reminds me that it is God and not me who is baking the pies. So maybe a better way to quote number my #1 thought would be “When life throws you lemons, trust God to make lemon meringue pie!”

Have a blessed day!
